The Best Things in Life are Free

December 1, 2017

“Time is the greatest gift that you can give to someone, because it’s like giving a portion of your life that you can never get back”

Good time of year to think of this quote. It’ also the perfect time to give thanks to those who volunteer to serve the public. In particular, the attorney volunteers of the Lawyers in the Library program at our Indio Branch deserves our utmost gratitude and special recognition.

I hear lawyers are often bombarded with requests for free legal advice and appeals to participate in Pro Bono programs directed to them from all directions. It makes me wonder where do they find time to serve their clients, serve on committees and governing boards of the professional association, non-profit organizations and community groups that they are affiliated with, not to mention their personal and family commitments. Here in Indio, members of the Desert Bar Associations manage to do just that. I am fortunate to work with them without whose support the Lawyers in the Library program would not have been possible.

The Lawyers in the Library program is held every 2nd Thursday of the month. Volunteer attorneys are available for free 20-minute consultations for people who have legal issues. The areas of law covered usually include, Family, Civil, Landlord/Tenant, and Probate. Reservations can be made by calling (760) 848-7151.

Many thanks to Karen Sloat for her continuing support of the Library’s programs. Our collaboration continues with the new President of the Desert Bar, Kimberly Lee. When she learned that we needed a new group of attorneys for the coming year, she immediately sends out the call for volunteers which received ample support from our local attorneys. Very impressive and much appreciated. A great partnership indeed!

We’ve had very positive comments from the library patrons who received help through this program. One of the first group of people attending this program, a gentleman, came out saying “That is exactly what I needed.”  Just love those win win situations! The attorneys who are generously giving their time can leave feeling that they had an impact on someone in need of their legal expertise. The patron in turn benefits by getting the answers to their questions, the guidance they need, and quite simply; an understanding of what to do next.

The Riverside County Law Library’s mission has always been to provide free and open access to the law. The Lawyers in the Library is one of several programs and services available to you at RCLL. Within our three locations, you will find a wealth of information waiting for you -  From our collection of print and online legal materials to the varied public programs - offered throughout the year.
