We are delighted to have Lexis+ available at RCLL. What is Lexis+?
Like Lexis Advance, Lexis+ functions as a database platform that allows lawyers, litigators, and legal researchers access to an expansive collection of legal resources. Lexis+ adds a few nifty features that build on and enhance the existing legal research platform. For starters, it allows users to increase the precision of their searches for resources. To help users unfamiliar with legal terminology, Lexis+ includes a natural language search, which, in a similar vein to Google, allows users to type questions into the search bar in everyday language. Further, Lexis+ provides analytical and practical tools to guide users towards resources that would help inquirers build a winning case without reinventing the wheel.
Lexis Advance vs. Lexis+ (What’s new? What’s stayed the same?)
Lexis+ offers fourteen additional online features, allowing patrons to pull up highly relevant results more efficiently, using the algorithmic matching of key search terms to primary and secondary legal sources, statutes, secondary materials, and practical guidance throughout the entire database (Product Spotlight: Lexis+). AI’s introduction into legal research has created exciting new possibilities. But longtime users of the service will still find that classic features such as Shepardizing are still available. In addition, familiar Lexis classics like the Deering’s Annotated California Codes, and the California Forms of Pleading and Practice are still easily accessible.
Key Research Capabilities Made Better with Lexis+ Features
Lexis Answers
To supplement the natural language search, Lexis Answers is a feature geared towards giving users direct answers to their legal research questions. In prior iterations of the service, answers would only come in the form of documents with potentially useful information highlighted. Lexis Answers still provides documents as part of the answer, but it will also provide direct answers to inquiries in a natural language as well, using AI to pull and cohere information from resources across the entire database.
Search Term Tree
Another noteworthy addition to the Lexis+ key feature family is the Search Term Tree. Now patrons can see how their search terms are applied when the results appear. Patrons can now see how terms and results are connected via a visualization image, indicating the relationship between their query and the list of resources displayed. Because of this innovative new feature, legal researchers just got so much closer to finding the right punch for a winning case.
